Documentary on the Armenian genocide spurs controversy

Last night KVPT, along with other PBS affiliates around the country, aired the hour-long documentary "The Armenian Genocide." Next Monday is Armenian Remembrance Day, a government-recognized day of remembrance for the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Turks. The documentary was not without controversy, however. Some Turks still deny the existence of the genocide, and in the spirit of presenting all sides of the story, PBS held and taped a 25 minute panel discussion on the issue. Two of the panelists argued the genocide never happened.

KVPT was one of a number of stations that chose not to air the panel discussion. The station also received complaints about airing the documentary, from people who said it hit too close to home.

Jewish / Armenian genocide

It would be extremely unlikely that a show on the Nazis' attempted extermination of the Jews would include a "panel discussion" of whether the Holocaust even occurred. I think I speak for the majority of Armenians when I say all we ask is for an acknowledgment that it happened, then move on, and do whatever possible to prevent it from ever occurring again.
