Australia's Tim Burton

The Fresno Filmworks 2nd Annual World Film Festival (hereafter shortened to "FF2AWFW") will be presenting "The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello" on Sunday May 7, at 3:00. For those unfamiliar, "Jasper" is an eerily surreal short film by aussie director Anthony Lucas. It's been met with quite a bit of critical acclaim and won craploads of awards.

The entire film is shot using a combination of stop motion, CG, and most interestingly- silhouette (a technique used on the very first animated film, "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" from 1926). The result is an entirely orginal look, somewhat akin to early Burton animations. There's a trailer available, which is actually the first two minutes of the film.

I usually avoid darkened theaters (out of a fear of grue's), but I may actually have to be there. It is being screened alongside four other Oscar nominated short films. Tickets are only 10$, but I plan on demanding the 2$ senior discount.

Actually, I meant the first 'feature-length' animated film. However, I just became aware of a film that pre-dates Prince Achmed, 'El Apóstol' by Quirino Cristiani from 1917.

silhouette animation

I think you meant, the first use of "silhouette animation" was "Adventures of Prince Achmed" in 1926, and it was the first feature (longer than a short) film, before Snow White and Gulliver's Travels.

thanks for the information.

no date for the DVD yet (stop-motion)

It may almost be worth going to see these short Oscar nominated animated films, and if you can get the discount even better.

The Very first animated film is not from 1926 there have been animated films made years before buy the likes of Dave & Max Fleischer, Ub Iwerks who worked with Disney in the early days creating Mickey Mouse. ... even some stop motion animation by Wladyslaw Starewicz was made before 1926. But they were not the first to animate with film. Stop Motion Tricks were used in a lot of the early films around 1900. Georges Méliés is the first ever to really use stop-motion photography, and to have many surviving films today. Melies most famous film 'Voyage to the Moon' used stop-motion in 1902 over 100 years ago.

In other classic animation recent news is that Disney got back the rights to their character "Oswald the Rabbit"
