Introduction
Hi Famous Folks,
My name is Steven Church and I will be joining the faculty at Fresno State in the Fall as a professor of Creative Nonfiction. I'm moving to Fresno this summer with my family and we'll be living in the Tower District. I have a 4 yr. old son; so we'd love to meet some other "artsy"-inclined parents. We're moving from Providenc, RI where "Spring" weather means 40 degrees and windy . . . We can't wait to get there and soak up all the sun and "famous" vibes. I've enjoyed reading this site as a way to get to know Fresno and the arts scene. Thanks for keeping this site rolling.
I hope to use my posts to publicize literary events, share favorite books, stories, essays, and perhaps even indulge in some rants, raves, and interviews with other writers in Fresno and around the country.
If you want to know more about me, I have a website (that's somewhat out-of-date) where you can find some info on me and my book, The Guinness Book of Me: a Memoir of Record (Simon & Schuster, 2005). It's at www.guinnessbookofme.com
Or you can always just send me an email at swchurch@gmail.com and I'm usually glad to respond.
If you're so inclined (and so very kind) you can purchase my book at www.powells.com (perhaps the coolest independent bookstore in the world)and that other HUGE online bookseller . . . stay tuned also as I will be offering seriously discounted copies of the book later this summer.
Thanks for reading. Please drop me a line and introduce yourself. Hope to see you around Fresno very soon.
-- Steve

Fresno
I just hope you like Fresno more than Providence RI. I wish you to enjoy every bit of it. As I would hate to see you in another 5 years and say it was a mistake to move west.
ENJOY FRESNO
Local Guinness
Welcome Steven!
I'm dying to read your book. I just read a review and it looks fascinating.
Did you know Fresno has a very special Guinness record holder?

Let us know if you think she's worth a statue. It's a real hotbed of controversy around here. [heee]
impressive
nice. I rember it. good stuff.
Eagles: the Last Resort (Hotel California 1976 final track)
The Eagles
D. Henley, D. Felder,G. Frey, R. Meisner, J. Walsh,
-they covered Jackson Browne's 'Take it Easy (earlier album),,,
-he might even be on this track on piano... dunno, can't find stinkin' liner notes... Tons of people used to cross over on each others albums.)
---Totally cool, (I did not know this,) the eagles backed up Randy Newman as 'the little criminals,'(Short People: single) on tour and on the album, but were not listed as 'the Eagles,'-due to contract regs...
--if you have an early pressing of Eagles or Joe Walsh Albums, read the inscription down past the last song (per side,) on the vinyl, past the grooves that the needle rides in (scribed in,) has such beauts as 'luncheon counter of the deli kind.' etc.
-Aside from being a gorgeous album, -was controversial due to the criticism of the church (good example in these lyrics,)
(album released at tail end of the Jesus Movement, -huge in SoCal.) -and for the legend that Anton LeVey (recently deceased: Founder: Church of Satan,) -was supposedly the figure photographed with his arms outstretched up on the balcony of the hotel, (inside gatefold: band photo.)-also leading to rumors that entire band were members of LaVey's church.
-A midget also is hanging himself on the ice machine.. (no wait, that's the Wizard of Oz,,, or was it Benji??? anyway...)
Well, that and 'Hotel California' supposedly being an insane asylum.
Hotel California: 1976
'The Last Resort'
(final track)
She came from Providence,
the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea
She heard about a place people were smilin'
They spoke about the red man's way,
and how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide
Down in the crowded bars,
out for a good time,
Can't wait to tell you all,
what it's like up there
And they called it paradise
I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high
Then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
through the canyons of the coast, to
the Malibu
Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do
Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought 'em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea
You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign:"Jesus is coming"
Brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign
Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name
of God
And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye
you're killing me
henley.
oh god, you're killing me. what is it? Some Don Henley? Not Joe Walsh . . . I can't quite get it . . .
arrrgh
she came from providence....
think about eagles not reeds or newman's.
aarrrrrgh
obscure ref...
I've heard this song so many times before... but at this hour all I can think is... either Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, or Ben Folds... but neither are really sticking... (It's not good enough to be Randy Newman...)
it will come to me...
uhnf...
..almost sounds like a happier version of something by Lou Reed... but nobody out here is that into him, and he's about as likely to write stuff like this as Leonard Cohen...
(maybe a girl singer...?
nah.... oh man, this one is going to drive me nuts...
theramin, anti... somebody help on this... or it's going to be a looooong weekend.)
....I'll go with Jackson Browne, (aka Jimmy Thudpucker,) for 300, Alex...
