New in the Tower: Au Lac Vegetarian
Eaters rejoice (especially vegans, vegetarians and Tower denizens). Au Lac is open.
As Kumar has previously pointed out, the vegan dining options in Fresno have been limited, to put it kindly. However, at Au Lac, the whole menu is fair game. Though everything is vegan, adventurous omnivores will certainly find something to enjoy.
When I stopped by on Thursday, May 11, which happened to be their first day open, chef Trung Tran whipped up an asparagus-and-onion Tofu Delight for me (it was pretty delightful, and a great deal at $5.95 - everything on the menu is that price) and sat down to chat for a few minutes.
There are 14 items on the menu, all favorites Trung has assembled from what he's learned apprenticing at vegetarian restaurants across the U.S., and they range from straight-ahead burgers and fried rice to teriyaki drumsticks and veggie fish.
Au Lac is located at 1495 N. Van Ness, (the former Tower Cafe building) and is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.

Au Lac keeps getting better
I tried the chow mein today and am officially addicted. They're starting a cool thing there tomorrow night - movies. The film will be screened outside. If all goes as planned this will be a regular event on thursday nights.
Rumor has it they may be the first spot in town to offer streaming audio of music shows... Stay tuned.
au lac and indico
i'm halfway down the menu and it's been one pleasant experience after another. Trung knows his menu's strengths. Three plusses are that they give you a bottled water with the entree that is served as a simple and elegant plate, and there's an espresso bar at the next window. Matt B. brews a good coffee and they are talking a Thursday-night open mic. All seems a great, affordable addiction so far and a nice bike stop.
Trying it all
Actually, I haven't been there but have tried some of my son's...Delicious and I am not a vegetarian.
M'boy has some restaurant experience, is vegan, and decided he is going to try everything on the menu. He looked at the selections and determined what we be the most costly to make and thus, perhaps be the most proportianately small. He is going to work his way up the chain. So far, he is ecstatic with everything. Including portion sizes. jeff
been there twice in the last 3 days... i've had the first two items on the menu... working my way down... the first sandwich is a fluffy soy chicken patty with teriyaki sauce (which is KILLER) onions, shrooms, and vegan mayo... quite good but i kind of prefer the second sandwich-- it's got a thicker texture and seems to compliment the sauce better... plus i'm not huge on onions and shrooms...
i swear, if this place adds a tempeh burger, it's all over for me... i'm pretty stoked about trying the chow mein... i should hit that one soon enough... the chef is a cool dude who knows his stuff...
