Downtown development roundup: more Broadway Row
What is up with Russell Cleming's story in today's Bee on the Broadway Row project? First, who is still calling the project area Uptown? The businesses, residents, and nonprofits in the area are calling themselves the Cultural Arts District (on account of all the museums and galleries in the area) these days, and have even formed a neighborhood association that holds joint press conferences. Someone oughtta send a memo to City Hall...
Second, folks have known since at least March (when we reported it) that Tutelian had walked away from Broadway Row. Third, everybody knows there was a showdown brewing between Tutelian and Reza Assemi, who built Broadway Studios on the parcel that Tutelian had earmarked for a parking lot to serve the Trade Center office building. The Bee reports a "funding gap" was the only publicly available bone of contention.
And finally, it's really weird the article didn't mention Vagabond Lofts. While not in the Broadway Row project area, the new housing development will create 38 new units just blocks away. Vagabond Lofts will open later this summer.
Disclosure: Reza's a friend and Famous' landlord.
