My first WiFi

I was very happy to hear that the city had taken the bold step of installing WiFi on the Fulton Mall. "This is a new day for Fresno", I thought to myself as I made plans to enjoy my new freedom, unencumbered by wires and cables. I journeyed to the Fulton Mall, and selected a shady spot well shielded from the sun.

Triumphantly, I fired up my brand new, (borrowed) Gateway Centrino laptop, expecting to connect quickly (and for free!) to the city of Fresno homepage, so I could send my thanks to the mayor for acting on one of the recommendations of the Creative Economy Council. Alas, it was not to be! My heart sank as I realized no wireless signal was to be had. "This can't be, WiFi on the mall is free!" I thought to myself, as I made my way through the morass of windows configuration panels, hoping to glipse the alledgedly available wireless network. Nothing. Not a poor signal, not a locked network, just...nothing.

Crestfallen, but not yet broken, I made my way to that towering structure, that symbol of Fresno's past glory and future hope (for condos), the Pacific Tower. As I entered the tower's shadow, I spoke silently to myself: "Surely said I, if there is a WiFi signal to be had, here it will be found." As I powered up the computer, my mind raced. "Oh Fresno, I thought, Fresno, that continues to sprawl despite evidence that it will lead to worse air and more traffic congestion; Fresno, of the poorly timed signal lights that cause me to burn $3.25 a gallon gas at an exorbitant rate; Fresno, that can't incentivize developers to build housing downtown; Fresno, that I will forgive for its trespasses against me if I can only see the Google homepage...Fresno, do me this one thing, and I will speak your promise and successes to the world!

As the computer finished powering up, I issued the ipconfig /renew command with crossed fingers. SUCCESS! An ip address from an external network was retrieved. My freedom having been reinstated, I triumphantly launched Firefox and smiled as the familiar Google homepage appeared, ready for my query. Satisfied at this turn of events, I closed the computer and proceeded back to my office, saying silently to myself, "now, if only this thing would work north of Fresno street!"

uh...

You have to start somewhere. Fresno with wifi downtown is better than without. Plus it sounds like the security errors are all gone. I say kudos to the people who DID something and are making good progress!

I care when we play catch-up. It makes me want to stay.

WIFI? Does anyone even

WIFI? Does anyone even care? Put a WiFi antenna on every block in the city and give everyone high speed internet and that would be cool. It would make people talk about Fresno. Instead we play catch up, nobody cares. Also what's up with this "hipster" thing? I was considering one of those condos downtown when I read it was going to be filled with "hipsters" Now I don't know. Sounds pretty stupid. Let the people who buy the condos by then, don't call them hipsters, jesus that sounds retarded. It sounds like your begging to be cool, just let Fresno be itself and it will be cool.
