Valley quickly becoming ethanol hub

The feud between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft rages on, only now it's for an environomentally friendly cause: Ethanol. Last year Bill Gate's investment arm put $84 million into Fresno-based Pacific Ethanol (PEIX). Last week Vinod Kholsa, Sun co-founder, announced a partnership with Western Milling to create ethanol manufacturer Cilion in Goshen.

Pacific Ethanol plans to build five ethanol plants by 2008, with a capacity of 420 million gallons per year. The new company, Cilion, will build eight plants by that time, with a capactiy of 440 million gallons. The governor has mandated that the state produce 20% of its own biofuels by 2010. California currently consumes 25% of the country's annual ethanol production, or 900 million gallons per year.
