Famous outage

Some of you may have wondered where the website has been for the last 12 hours? Short answer: Hidden. Kind of.

The AboveNet datacenter this website sits in had a major outage - both cisco routers were completely knocked out. This goes beyond basic hosting stuff - it's the place the hosting companies are hosted (if that makes any sense).

We don't have details yet exactly what happened but suffice it to say there are thousands of exremely peeved people out there - Famous included.

Let's all think happy thoughts for AboveNet and hope we don't have to sit through another one of these. ick.

goofy for sure

Luckily, I'm moving reseller hosts next week. ;)

Most of the errors were: *Parse error*: parse error, unexpected T_STRING" etc... After fixing a few files I knew it was bigger problem. I ftp'd the on-line sites to my home development mirror. I noticed anywhere from 1 to 2000 lines of code missing on way too many core/no direct access files. What the F?

Tech support/ticket response became non-existent so I gzipped & uploaded all the 2 week old mirrored files. Everything runs perfect again. Didn't mess up the databases at all (up to date). I still don't get it, all these files had permissions at 644. It just had to be a hardware related problem & not a hacking attempt...sticks head in sand.

outing outages

That sounds like server timeouts to me. Wacky, maddening stuff all around.

So it turns out the downtime we experienced was not due to what we were initially told. AboveNet blows (not in a good way) and will not be causing problems for our web hosts for much longer. Good riddance.

re: famous outage

Tre bizzare. I had 100's files get truncated across 3 sites around 4pm yesterday. Sometimes it was only the last ?> tag in a php file, sometime half the file was truncated...those sites were in the liquidweb data center back east.

All back up and running this afternoon.
