Fresno as an "out-of-town-tryout" venue??
July 25, 2006
Yes the rumors are true! A performer from San Francisco is ACTUALLY previewing a brand spankin new show here before it premieres at the Edmonton Fringe Festival next month!
Stephen Karwoski who played the 2005 Rogue with "Adventures Of A Substitute Teacher" to great reviews (a Fresno Bee Top 5 pick) has a brand new show! "Are Ya Dating" chronicles his take on the foibles of the dating scene. A second preview is slated in San Francisco's Exit Theatre later this month.
Stephen has earned some great reviews for his shows across the North American continent and I just had to ask him the money question: "Why Fresno?"
"You have an honest audience in Fresno. I discovered that 2 years ago when I performed at the Rogue. There are times when one is playing in theatre saturated and savvy cities like SF and Toronto... one is not quite sure if the show is really connecting. I'm talking about an honest, real people connection. You got it here. Besides that... you guys (the Rogue) throw better parties than most of the fringes I've been to!"
Well, there you have it.
Rumor also has it that our very own Victor DesRoches may also be bouncing some new stuff off the audience on Thursday. I guess the only way to find out is to turn up.
Over here at Rogue World Headquarters we were not really counting on this development... but we sincerely hope this trend catches on and continues.
New stuff and good beer... could it get any better? For details go to http://roguefestival.com/ryr/rogue_year_round.htm
Disclosures:we certainly could talk about change... but we rather get it done.
