We took a bit of a tour around the new store, Yoshi NOW!, opened by the Yoshi from our beloved
Garage Sale yesterday. Yoshi's got all his good stuff
organized and accessible in the new space. The retro/vintage/mid century furniture is all in great shape and some of the luggage matches! Yoshi NOW! (open 10am to 6pm Tuesday through Saturday) is just a stone's throw from the new
Gardenside studio (which has some awesome signage compliments of
Eatcho) on Broadway & Mono south of Grizzlie's Stadium.
One block over on Van Ness
Corridor 2122 and Studios @ the Bus Barn will soon be joined by Gallery 25 and Fig Tree Gallery. The new gajillion dollar
Met will expand into their existing spots. Downtown is turning into a fantasy world where we can walk around waving to our friends, stop for a coffee or a sake, listen to some new music or go shopping. We're pretty confident what's happening now would trump anything
Forest City came up with.
If you'll remember, last spring the
city council agreed to negotiate a $350-$400 million deal with Forest City (who helped develop parts of River Park) to develop the area south of the stadium with big box stores and fountains.
A year ago the
Bee called the area inhabited by Gardenside and Yoshi NOW! the "ugly stepchild of downtown" and a "forgotten outpost." Not so true anymore; we hope the city will be patient and let the spontaneous order emerge.
On to other forgotten neighborhoods: the
Beehive has a bit on a new day care center on the west side. And not-yet-forgotten neighborhoods:
Joan Obra says good bye to Echo and hello to
Senses in the neighborhood that brought the world
three strikes.
