early this year

Yes I know Dave Wakeling performed as English Beat this year, but I was talking about the 'Special Beat' and the Specials original singer Terry Hall.

If you did not know 'Enjoy Yourself (it's latter than you think)' is not a Specials song... they are covering a song by written by Carl Sigman. Guy Lombardo, Bing Crosby & even Doris Day have sang versions of this song.

"Carl Sigman and Herb Magidson's 1940's chestnut, performed by the champagne king Guy Lombardo himself, was given the royal seal of approval with Prince Buster's "Enjoy It", and later enjoyed itself immensely at The Specials' hands. The group had been performing the song live to fans' fervent response, often utilizing the number to end their pre-encore set.Which probably explains why two different versions book-end their More Specials album. The one that kicks off the set is an exuberant expression of carpe diem, set to a rollicking arrangement where keyboardist Jerry Dammers vies for attention with the brass section led by Dick Cuthell's blasting cornet and Rico Rodriguez blazing trombone.By contrast, the reprised version is snail slow, moody and almost oppressive, even with the Go-Go's adding vocal support, with the emphasis now coming firmly down on the ominous warning "Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think." The opener's more fun, the closing more disturbing, and taken together the two perfectly encapsulate the group's conflicting emotions towards the world at large." - music reviews

beat and specials

When I saw the "English Beat" in Santa Cruz in July, Dave Wakeling was singing and the guitar player was from the Specials. They did 2 Specials' song. Enjoy Yourself was one, and it was great.

The Beat

I've seen confirmation of the English Beat will be at the Tower Theater on wednesday November 15, 2006.
But I did not see a listing for the Specials, and looking around online for a specials touring confirmation I've not seen yet. But If they are playing it would really only be them if Terry Hall was singing.
The Special Beat played at the Wilson Theater in the very early 1990's ... this was the mix of members of English Beat and Specials doing sets of both English Beat and Specials songs. But Terry Hall was not there singing nor was Dave Wakeling I think.
