Paying For Fresno History
Fresno City College employees are getting the nudge. They are being nudged into giving up a days' pay, every month, for a the next three years, all in an effort to help bridge the gap between the money FCC has to restore the old Administration Building and the money they need.
Yes, this is a creative way to help pay for the old buildings' renovations, but I can't imagine every employee is happy to do this. It's a damn good cause, the building definitely needs to be saved, but if I was asked to do something similar at my work, I don't know if I could do it.
I shiver at what losing a day's worth of pay, once a month, would do to my monthly nerd budget.
I would fall WAY behind on my Spiderman and X-men comics from Heroes. There would have to be one less run to Mike's Pizzeria for one of their killer calzones. Tower Records' line to purchase whatever metal album came out on Album Release Tuesday, would have one less metal-nerd.
What would you have to give up? Do you have it in you to let loose some of your paycheck to revive a historic Fresno building?

The Effort
The OAB campaign has raised abot %500,000 so far internally.
Straight Facts Kiera
Kiera,
A day's pay is what I read in an article, sorry for the error.
But YOU need to check YOUR FACTS as well, before you post.
I DID NOT say "Coerced" or "Pressured", I said nudged in a playfull tone and I also said it was a good cause, the building needs to be saved.
The point of the post is to ask Fresnans if they could do this at their work.
Re: FCC Old Admin Building
The biggest concern about the OAB was that it supposedly didn't comply with the Field Act which mandates earthquake "proof" building standards for public schools in CA. The OAB was built prior to the Field Act, and thus need seismic retrofitting. That's expensive.
Kiera thanks
I initially saw the string come back up and was quite hesitant to click on it, (for obvious reasons.)
I really appreciate your clarifying the situation, (as I said in my postings, --if it's voluntary, and with no armtwisting, it's fine.)
Personally, having seen (at least one of the major buildings down there, not sure if it was this one or this series, but it looked extremely cool, and I was heartbroken to see them just sitting there, fenced off, -with no money to even tear them down (because of all the abatement issues...) sort of like seeing a building in purgatory.)
Few things rival being in a classic hall of learning... I had the opportunity to sit alone in the dim light of a lecture hall at Princeton late one night, just after they had varnished the floors and desks, (the chair/desks are screwed to the floor, by the way,) and it was exhilirating...
I think it's cool that you guys are contributing funds as a way to revive the place (from what I understand, one of the major concerns was lead and asbestos abatement... It can be a bear, -but it is certainly fixable.)
Considering how few 'historic,' and beautiful buildings get saved (particularlly in a state that is, I think about as old as my ball team (yankees,) ---I think it's excellent that the community is doing this, -and that the faculty is assisting.
(This is NOT the same situation that my agency, years ago was doing, and I'm glad to hear such.)
---By the way---
-How is the effort going? Does anybody know?
one HOUR, not one day's pay
Please get your facts straight.
I attended the meeting where this was presented to FCC faculty. They're being asked to donate 1 HOUR per month for the next 36 months, not a full day. And it is being ASKED, they are not being coerced or pressured...at least I have not felt coerced or pressured. You can either do it or not. You can also donate a flat amount, or donate more. I chose to donate almost three hours of pay a month...but that was my choice, no one is twisting my arm.
This will create much needed classroom and office space on campus, which will make everyone's job easier. When you add that to the appeal of saving a landmark that has made a tremendous impact on the community (I've heard so many stories of "Oh, I met my wife/husband in that building!), it's more than worth an hour's pay.
troll under the bridge
The real troll is the anonymous commenter that calls out users that don't hide, behind anonymity.
to who ever made to troll comment we'll call you a LAMER
hello pot, this is the kettle, and you also are black
i find it quite funny that people follow one writer, across several threads, to call that writer an internet troll.
i also find it quite funny that usually these people don't sign in. you have got to love anonymity.
it's spelled T-R-O-L-L
psst,

Do Fresno a favor and stop sniffing the shellac,
when the burning bush told you to go trolling, i'm pretty sure that he was refering to this type of trolling.

Does anyone know where in hell Dante put false profits, i'm pretty sure it was on the same level with the "psuedo artist(s) with bad FredaKhalo Braids, --and a countenance not unlike Yoko Ono."
Frida is probably rolling over in her grave everytime you misspell her name.
Final note, ssssshhhhhhhh already.
re: sacrificing of funds
This was in another state, and within a different genre of employment, (I was working with a residential social service agency.)
We were in a meeting (we had weekly ones, with a big one each month,) and during this it was announced by the director that, 'because of the various counties being far back in their payments to various agencies, they were going to be witholding part of our checks, --but that we'd be paid eventually,' and then did this for a couple of months.
Considering that we were making so little as it was, it took a bite.
However, since a lot of us also lived on property that was owned by the facility, we were basically stuck with the situation.
Looking into it further showed that what they did was illegal, and that the administration had missmanaged a lot of funds, (upper echelon getting a ton of dough, troops in the trenches getting a line of hooey.
If it's on a volunteer basis that the funds are being raised this way, then it would be fine, (but the key word has to be volunteer.)
There also has to be no discernable pressure to do this, or it becomes armtwisting.
The school is putting itself into an awkward position (possibly,) with how this is being done.
That it is a municipal employer, (ours was a combination private and public, and used to dance back and forth between the two in their codes,) --means that there are State Laws (as well as Fed. to satiate.)
-From what I understand California has very tough labor laws.
--Unless, again, it's purely an idea floated by someone who has no leverege,(like, someone's eight year old,)
-is purely a volunteer situation,
-cannot in any way be interpreted as placed upon anyone from above,
It could lead to trouble.
