Downtown development round up: Cold storage edition

Hobbs & Parson Produce BuildingThe Bee reports on developer Steve Geil's plans for the old warehouse on H and Tulare, across the street from the stadium. It's just to the south of the senic Greyhound bus depot, with the words "Wholesale Fruit and Produce" etched into the wall.

Geil told the Bee he sees offices and a 4,000 square foot restaurant in the space. 4,000 square feet seems like a lot for a lunch-only business, but we know bus travelers like to dine in style.

Fulton Mall

The historic Fulton Mall and Chinatown are two downtown areas which still retain an exceptional amount of historic buildings and architecture of contextual, associative and memorial value in comparison with other cities of California and the Western United States, and are being considered for preservation as historic districts.

search tools

search "ethiopian" in the search famous box @ the top of the page, and the first story you should find is on lucy's lair. or just search that.

Ethopian Resturant

I know that an Ethopian resturant opened within the last few months. I do not remember the name or where it is. Does anyone have that information and how was the food>

Fresno has many fine home grown resturants. To name a few Slates, Senses, Palamino, Parma, Patio,Campagna, and the many fine ethnic resturants in all price ranges. I find them far superior and cleaner than many of the ones in S.F. that are touted by "It's Fresno, can't be good crowd"

dining upstairs downtown uptown downstairs

on upstairs downtown..the only way i knew about it is because i got an email at work with their menu and website. i am absolutely stoked to go there next week and test out their sustainable food. i mean, sustainable food in fresno!!! almost an oxymoron. almost.

on the cold storage building...a chain!! agh!! chains often have design guidelines and standards which cannot be toyed with (i.e. pottery barn in fig garden, notice how it doesn't quite match? its not a coincidence neither was it overlooked)and they might mess with the historical integrity of the interior and exterior of the building. i desparately hope that the owner will think beyond 'lunch only' and cater beyond the '8-5 then get the blank out of here' downtown crowd to other people who would thrive in some nightlife downtown (besides watching the grizzles try really hard).

we have to grow the mentality that we are a bustling metropolis of 500,000 people, not a small town that shuts down before sunset...and not everyone is afraid of getting mugged downtown at dark...

I think that another problem is that their prices doubled over a period of two years. We would go once a month untill we could only afford once a year, and then we could not keep up with when they would be open.

Re: Upstairs Downtown

Upstairs Downtown is a great restaurant in an area with little traffic. They haven't done any promotion (someone here said they felt it would take away from the food?!!) If people don't know or remember you exist - why stay in business? There is no nobility in business failure.

bus station

My niece and sister went all the way across the country on Greyhound, they both said fresno had one of the nicer bus stations. They also said that Chicago's was absolutely the worst.

I hope this thing takes off, i cant help but feel that private money is starting to pour back into downtown. Which is by far what it needs the most. With a little help from local gov't i definetly see things picking up.

I hope that they have more success than my favorite Upstairs at the Downtown. If they bring in a chain they will do well. Fresno seems to like chains.

I have been in many bus stations

Fresno bus depot is not the worst. Chicago was the scariest. The security guard kept a young 17 year old from wandering off to get robbed.

Jarah has a point about not being able to afford fine dining. Last I was at the Fresno bus station there was a Burger King inside. Important to stay near your luggage.

On the other hand with the train depot open, Grizzly Stadium and a nicer looking bus depot restaurant it sets the stage. Keep making improvments to Fresno and we will have the city we dreamed of living in or at as kids.

103 years old

it's embossed near the peak with the year '1903' ... it's good to hear that something may be done with it other than tearing it down. That's what seems may happen to that other warehouse building that the roof collapsed on last week.

...across the street from the,,,, hmmmmm

...ya think maybe folks schlepping the fam. to an event at the polo grounds, might care for a decent nosh first, and then perhaps a coctail afterwards? (simply by fjording the avenue?)

-sounds like somebody's wetting a line where the fish happen to be.
