Lover Other
Surrealists, half-sisters, Jewish, lesbians, gender benders and war resisters, Claude Cohun and Marcel Moore have been mostly forgotten in the canon of Surrealist art and lesbian history. Hammer works to correct this situation by exposing their lives, artistic practice and love together in Lover Other.
Born to a wealthy intellectual French Jewish family, Lucie Schwob changed her name to one of indeterminate gender, Claude Cahun. Her half-sister, Suzanne Malherbe, artist and illustrator, also adopted a masculine name, Marcel Moore. Claude began a lifelong pursuit of self- portraiture and female and gender identity using masks, disguise, and masquerade through photographs taken by Moore. War resisters Claude and Marcel were captured and imprisoned during the war, their survival was tested and their art barely survived - Hammer weaves the story of their lives together with their inseparable and beautifully rendered body of work.
