Destination: Retail

An update to the previous post on the South of Stadium project:

The City's interim Redevelopment Agency Director Marlene Murphy explains that the next steps in the exclusive negotiating agreement with Forest City is to look at the results of their due diligence and then begin to negotiate "deal points". From there the City will develop the initial site plan.

The Fresno delegation to the Las Vegas International Council of Shopping Centers conference includes Murphy, city manager Andy Souza, and council members Tom Boyajian, Cynthia Sterling, Larry Westerlund, and Jerry Duncan. [The Bee reminds members of the Brown act here.]

Tom Boyajian, Redevelopment Agency chairman, was impressed with the scale of the conference. "It's the largest retailers and mall people in one spot. It's really incredible and we have a booth here to try and sell Fresno. We’re here for Forest City and our development downtown, and they have a million-dollar booth here."

"If we can get this done downtown will be on it's way as a destination place," he told Famous. "The City of Fresno is finally on the map."

"Destination retailer" was the catch phrase of the council member. When asked what he would like to see south of the stadium he said, "I'd like to see something that [represents what] Fresno's all about and have it be a destination place, have some housing and retailers and movies."

Contrary to comments made by Mayor Autry, District 3 representative Cynthia Sterling thinks a big anchor tenant is key to the project's success. "Don't let anyone tell you you can do anything without an anchor tenant," she said.

She thinks the project will be a boon for economic development. "We can combat unemployment. We're looking at potential anchor tenants. The potential is here- [we] can eliminate our own joblessness and we can increase our housing."

Sterling estimated that a year from now there will be "substantial improvement" to the area downtown. A citizen's participation group has already been formed for this project, and more information is available from her office.

No need to remind you that this is your downtown, and you are welcome to tell your elected officials what you think. Contact Cynthia Sterling or Tom Boyajian.
