Fresno Met presents First Friday Films

The final installment of the Met's 2006 First Friday Films series is set for Friday, October 6!

City Architecture explores the materials, buildings, and methods of construction that make our urban spaces.

First Friday Films will be held in the lot adjacent to the Reeves ASK Science Center at 933 Van Ness (at Tulare Street) in downtown Fresno. Lawn chairs are recommended, as the lot can get dusty if one sits on the ground. This free event will begin at 8.30 p.m. with music provided by DJ Frank D from KFSR, California State University Fresno's radio station. Film screenings begin at 9 p.m.

CITY ARCHITECTURE October 6

Conical Intersect, 1975, 19 min.
Gordon Matta-Clark
Matta-Clark is known for his building cuts, which question the solidity of built structures and renegotiate the borders of enclosed space. This film follows the realization of Conical Intersect at the site of two adjacent 17th century Parisian buildings slated for demolition. Using construction tools, Matta-Clark created a conical-shaped hole that spiraled from the lower level of the street at a 45-degree angle through walls, ceilings and the roof, offering passersby an astounding view of the buildings' internal skeleton.

The Arsenal at Danzig and Other Views, 2001, 8 min.
Timothy Hutchings
Standing in front of historic European buildings, the tourist waves excitedly into the camera. At first glance this seems to be a recording from the early 20th century. However, the artist created this piece in 2001 inserting himself into photographs of grand buildings, which were destroyed during the world wars. Using digital technology and camera movement, Hutchings travels to bygone times and places. Purposeful glitches left in the video humorously reveal the project's truthful nature.

Christo in Paris, 1990, 58 min. (excerpt)
Albert and David Maysles, Deborah Dickson, and Susan Froemke
Wrapping Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris, was the first grand-scale urban project realized by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Ten years in the working, it took much effort, planning, and debating with political leaders, among them Jacques Chirac. In September 1985, a group of 300 professional workers undertook the task of wrapping the bridge with a golden, silky polyamide fabric. "Never," as the French Minister of Culture succinctly stated, "did anyone look at the Pont Neuf as much as the day it was hidden."

My Architect, 2003, 116 min. (excerpt)
Nathaniel Kahn
This film gives justice to both the architect and the man Louis Kahn, who died famous, but bankrupt and alone. Directed by his illegitimate son Nathaniel, who searches to understand his father, the journey leads to some of the elder Kahn's award-winning buildings, including the Salk Institute, Kimbell Art Museum, and the Capital Complex of Bangladesh. He meets his father's contemporaries, colleagues, students, wives, and children resulting in a documentary both authoritative and affectionate.
