Is Fresnofication even a word?
Yeah, thats right, Fresnofication. Are you offended? Here's the story:
So today, we were watching the film "Harvest of Fear" in our plant physiology lab. Excellent film which portrays both sides on the debate over GMOs, biotechnology, and agriculture. Interesting interviews. Anyhow, my prof starts this conversation with the class about sustainable agriculture and the like, and how fast food is really the opposite of anything sustainable, and how it is sad to see a Kentucky Friend Chicken on every corner, and how everything seems to be becoming so homogenized...."its like we are seeing the Fresnofication of our country!". Now, I am not one to speak out loud in class very often. But I did. It was fun.
So, honestly? We need to give Fresno some better PR. I wasn't offended by his comment, because he has a point, (and he is a really good professor) but come on! So anyhow, that was class. Now its time to make my delicious genetically modified dinner.

sustainability
yeah, we definately have some sustainability issues in Fresno...
genetically modified foods (herinafter referred to as GMOs) are inevitably going to be in most of our food. except for you all who love the organics. so every time you eat your bagel...your bowl of cereal...your pita salad...it definately contains some form of GMOs. they aren't used AS much in a lot of the crops we see here in the valley, like grapes, tree fruit, etc...GMO crops are more likely to be grains, soybeans, corn, and other more midwestern crops.
if you are worried about the long term effects of GMOs to your body, so are a lot of people. they aren't necessarily a big deal, at least i think, in comparison to pesticide residues, or something like that. but the fact that their long term effects are unknown can freak people out (hint: greenpeace). then again, without GMOs, we wouldn't be able to help developing countries produce their own crops at much higher yields so that they don't have to be dependant on the US to solve their hunger problems. ethical issue? definately.
i totally recommend renting the "harvest of fear" documentary. its really entertaining and educational.
Interesting
I have never thought about it that way, and if my knowledge of the central valley is correct, the majority of the worlds food comes out of the central valley. It's some outrageous fraction like 2/3. And such, the ratio of family farms to large corporate farms is like 300 acres to 1. So, if the majority of all food comes from the central valley, and the majority of foods are genetically augmented, there must not be any fast food restaurant or house hold this does not effect in or outside the United States *****. This must be some perpetuation of in-sustainability in the world as a whole, .... the central valley especially Fresno with its centrality to the overall farming community, I guess we could call Fresno its propagator. Though we have to look at the positive aspects, its about Fresno! Acknowledging we have a problem is the first step.
For an added bonus, the first franchise of the key company in this ecological in-sustainability, McDonald's, is in Fresno on Blackstone.
(***** My facts are based on prier givens, I could be completely wrong, though I don't think I'm too far off. If I am, it's probably in over estimations on the behalf of Fresno.)
HUH ???
Oh my goodness ... did that all come out of you ... that would take a month of Sundays for me to think of .... but I guess it rolls off your sharp mind like dance steps come to me on the dance floor
