XIU XIU brings Music FORTUNE CELLARS brings Art to HOWIE'S!!!

XIU XIU (who's new album "The Air Force" recently landed in the top 10 on CMJ Charts) will be curating a big Music and Art Festivity @ Howie & Son's Pizza on Tuesday, Nov. 7!

XIU XIU will headline, playing after three other art/rock bands that they'll be bringing along: Congs For Brums, Dirty Projectors, and Grouper. All bands on this bill are extremely unique, employing a mulit-instrmental approach to their uniquely modern music. The instruments are electronic, organic, and often strange home-made contraptions. These bands will take the same show to S.F.'s prestigious Great American Music Hall a couple nights later.

The ART SHOW portion of the eve..."Fortune Cellars" will be curated by Fresno graphic artist Aurora Armijo in the adjoining room. The first of a series of visual art shows will be shown on the same night, featuring the collective work of Aurora Armijo, Jennifer Emerling, and Laura Goldstone.

Open and honest, Laura Goldstone's work gives heed to the delicate line illustrations one might dreamily remember from storybooks of childhood. Not without their fair share of acute self-actualization, Goldstone's interest in natural elements and a sense of hope prevail in the art being displayed on Nov. 7th.

Aurora Armijo graduated with Goldstone with respective degrees in fine arts from California State University, Fresno, in 2004, where they both worked and had their art shown as Artists in Residence at The Metropolitan Museum. Armijo's work focuses on familial relationships and nomadic experiences, as illustrated by her large, stark portraits.

Jennifer Emerling loves capturing movement—for her it's important to maintain a natural, organic sense of the event being photographed, contrasted by electric color and the feeling of magic. Emerling recently had her first solo show of photographs at Trends Body Art and Tattoo Studio in Fresno. She currently attends Brooks Institute of Photography in Ventura.

Fortune Cellars features the combined work of all three artists working as one. The piece centers around the human need to control not only our own destiny, but also the destiny of everything tangible, and the inevitable control of those things we can't grasp. Regulating nature, and then, in turn, seemingly establishing safety and security are ways of cementing our past and setting up our future. Paintings, photographs, and found objects come together to question the inner conflict over the push and pull of our own power in the destruction, manipulation, and creation of our own little world.

See you at the show,
