Herndon vs. Van Ness

I was in Casa Corona at Cedar/Herndon last Friday.
It was packed.
We waited in the bar for a table for 2 hrs 45 minutes (big group).
Bought lots of expensive drinks.
The food was lousy.
The service was rude and generally horrible. (Then they have the nerve to add an 18% tip.)
I won't go back again. Ever.
Why do people go there?
Is it all location?
Mezcal's food is really pretty good.
They're open late Friday night.
They're Downtown (Van Ness).
It's nicer inside than CC.
The service is good.
So many people willing to accept poor quality.
I must be getting old.
I just don't understand.

Yah, I don't get it either.

Yah, I don't get it either. CC is just an overhyped place that a lot of the younger crowd go to. They have like a dollar taco special and that plus beer specials is a good time for younger people. A lot of places do an automatic tip when your in a larger crowd and I guess its gone up since they did 18%. I can't really think of a place that i've been to that has really good authentic mex food. There's a place in Riverpark over by Coldstone that's good.

re: Casa Corona

I totally know what you are saying.

My sister is obsessed with Casa Corona, and everytime we hang out she drags me there. (I guess I can't complain too much, I am always down for Mexican food, even if its not authentic) I haven't been to Mezcal yet, but I can't wait to try it. Really, I'm not sure what the hype is about CC. My sis claims that they have the best service "they pour your soda glass like every 5 seconds!!" and the best chips and salsa...and of course, every single time we go there we always see people we know, which is fun. I hear the bar scene is good too, which I haven't explored yet. I guess if a few people get all jazzed about a place and spread the word, it can get popular fast. And the location is convenient, being right next door to People's Church and Fresno Christian High School. Everyone loves Mexican food after church.

As far as Fresno Mexican restaurants, I would choose La Torta on Ventura (I think?) any day over CC. Its so cheap, and its yummy. And I love it when you almost have to order in Spanish. You really can't beat that. But I suppose for the northern crowd, Ventura Street at night (a 15 min drive) isn't as appealing as driving a mile or two in a familiar area. It is more sustainable for them...less driving....local business.
