The Movies is a great shop. But, just to be technical lets say it has the best selection within 150 miles...afterall SF is within 200 miles, and I know some shops there with incredible catalogs.
vuhdeo
yup, Jeff's shop probably has the only copy of Weather Woman on the west coast. He gots the rainy day/midnight classics and the film studies discussion ammo.
Make sure the old VHS heads are de-magged & clean.. there's an unseen world waiting on those shelves.
200 Miles
If I didn't own a video store I would send you to the Public Library also. Being the reluctant capitalist that I am tho I will have to post this. So where does the county library send patrons that they are unable to accomodate? To THE MOVIES.
Putting aside libraries (a valuable resource for film on video) for a second let's talk stores. Netflix isn't even a brick & mortar store, it is a fancy cyber-wocky that entices you to send even more of your money out of town further wreaking havoc on your local economy. You can't go to Netflix to talk about movies with staff, their friends & even other customers. You can't go to Netflix to find out about movies you didn't even know that you wanted to see.
The Movies is the oldest, dustiest and smallest-sized video store in town. 23 years. They also have the largest (about 7000) selection of film on video in town (except library) and certainly the BEST selection within 200 miles.
What were you looking for? Sundance, Independent Spirit, Golden Globe award winners? We got lots of them. Documentaries? Blues & Jazz? Gay & Lesbian? Lots of them. American Film Institute's 100 Greatest American Films? All of them. Oscar winners for Best Picture? All of them. Laurel & Hardy? Mae West? Francis the Talking Mule? Jim Jarmusch? Wim Wenders? Les Blank? Short films? Bunuel? Bergman? Woody Allen? Preston Sturges? Kenneth Anger? Maya Deren? Nacho Libre? (We don't have that altho we carry quite a few mainstream films too). Resnais? Brazilian? French? We even have a dedicated "Christmas Movies" and "Fresno" section among others. At The Movies we like to think we have AT LEAST touched upon all aspects of film-making history. Movies are what we do. We are about OUR library.
So what were you looking for? Questions, anyone? Requests? Share 'em here or email jeffatmovies@hotmail.com or 559-233-8346 or 1435 N. Van Ness in Van Ness Village in the Tower District.
the County Library, has a good collection of DVD's to check out and thanks to measure B you can even make Suggestion for Purchase for the collection.
the Movies is the best local "mom and pop" video rental shop, but I find now that the online rental mailings (netflix and blockbuster) has taken over. Also the Library has over 10,000 DVD's and VHS in the database available for check out, there is a wait on some of the more popular titles, so you never see them on the shelves. Besides some foreign films the Library has a great classics collection, why pay to rent a classic when you can get it for Free at the Library, just login, search for what you want, and request it to your local library near you, after a few times, your Librarian workers will know you.
The Movies
Movies has a good selection I hear. In the Tower District.
