Rail consolidation: What's 100 years?

Fresno has a reputation for train collisions. In the past three years, two Fresno City College students have been killed while crossing train tracks. Perhaps the problem is the train tracks run through the middle of town.

The City's first master plan- way back in 1918- advocated rail consolidation. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe line runs through the center of Fresno while the Union Pacific follows Highway 99. It's included as part of the City's Vision 2010 plan and has support of both rail companies. But now developers want to build homes on land earmarked for rail consolidation and a future high-speed rail service. The council is set to vote on the development today.

The cost of consolidation could climb to $500 million, according to some estimates. That's about the same price as one Bass Pro.
