McClatchy Buys the Famous Sites

December 14, 2006 (Fresno, Calif.) — The Fresno Bee has purchased FresnoFamous.com, a local website launched in April 2004 by sole proprietor Jarah Euston. FresnoFamous.com is a website dedicated to cataloging, exploring and discovering life in Fresno. The site is a place people can share opinions, news and information about Fresno.

"We're excited to see FresnoFamous.com continue on with the greater resources of The Fresno Bee. The site was built for and by our community, and that focus and mission will never change," said Euston, the creator and former owner. "We're looking forward to adding new features, new content, and other site improvements in the future."

The website will be managed independently of The Bee, with Valerie Bender, vice president of custom publications, overseeing it.

"Fresno Famous will remain separate from The Fresno Bee newspaper, but will gain the resources of a much larger media company. We owe our success to the community of users on the site, and know this sale will only improve user experience," said Euston.

Since its launch, FresnoFamous.com has grown to a community of nearly 2,000 active users who submit blogs, articles, photos, event listings and comments about the community. Users frequent FresnoFamous.com to make entertainment plans, debate the latest issues at City Hall and submit news others can use. In September 2006, the site generated 25,604 unique visitors, 44,427 total visits and 138,458 page views.

Featured in the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal, FresnoFamous.com is a pioneer in the field of "citizen journalism"? in which news and information are created by citizens, not professional journalists.

After its success in Fresno, a similar website was created for Modesto. That site, too, ModestoFamous.com, has been purchased by The McClatchy Company and will continue operations through The Modesto Bee.

"Purchasing a strong franchise such as FresnoFamous.com gives The Bee another way in which to reach younger readers with information they seek," said Valerie Bender, vice president of custom publications for The Bee. "Our intention is to keep the high standard of blogging and information that has led to the success of FresnoFamous.com and to, over time, continue to grow the content and opportunities for citizen journalism on the site."

The website will not change dramatically. Often known for taking shots at The Fresno Bee, FresnoFamous.com will continue to enjoy its independence from The Bee and will continue to host candid and open conversations on any topic of interest.

"Our hope is that many things that Jarah Euston had planned for the site's growth will come to fruition through the multitude of resources we have. It is also our intention to retain the personality behind FresnoFamous.com and that those in the public who currently participate in the site will continue to do so. We also hope others will join those conversations and make future contributions to FresnoFamous.com as we grow its readership."

Jarah Euston will continue to blog for FresnoFamous.com for the next six months until a complete transition takes place.

The Bee is owned by The McClatchy Company (NYSE: MNI), headquartered in Sacramento, Calif., and is the leading newspaper and Internet publisher in its region. The McClatchy Company is the second-largest newspaper company in the United States, with 32 daily newspapers and approximately 50 non-dailies. McClatchy owned newspapers include the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune, The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Kansas City Star, The Charlotte Observer, and The (Raleigh) News & Observer. In addition, McClatchy has a robust network of internet assets, including leading local websites in each of its daily newspaper markets, offering users information, comprehensive news, advertising, e-commerce and other services. The company also owns and operates McClatchy Interactive, an interactive operation that provides websites with content, publishing tools and software development; Real Cities (http://www.RealCities.com ), the largest national advertising network of local news websites, including more than 130 newspaper websites; and 15.0% of CareerBuilder, the nation's largest online job site. McClatchy also owns 25.6% of Classified Ventures, a newspaper industry partnership that offers classified websites such as cars.com and apartments.com . McClatchy is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MNI.

All good things come to an end. I enjoyed it while it lasted, thanks jarah and company.

not much will change

Don't panic. Not much will change, maybe better/more frequent banner ads. The Bee has some money to burn from interactive ad profits.

Drama always kicks ass on social networking sites. No drama = no traffic = no ad revenue. Extra bitching increases traffic & profit for the Bee. Thank you! Keep it coming!

Relax, the Apocalypse Hasn't Arrived, Yet...

So, Get Out! Magazine was cutting edge, independent journalism destroyed by the corporate greed of The Bee? And Famous is destined to fall down the same abyss?

Maybe all the writings of the demise of Famous is part of the plot to bring down this fine web site. Maybe The Bee has hired dozens of young journalists and assigned them to compose all these negative comments. Maybe this is the evil genius of the conspiracy to drive readers away from this site so that people can only read The Bee and the menu at Starbucks.

Let's all take a deep breath and praise Jesus that his birthday is finally over. Let's give Jarah the benefit of the doubt, she has done a fine job so far. If Famous does become a mouthpiece for Satan, maybe someone out there can start a new web site and totally devote their life to it without accepting any pay. Then, we would have purity.

Wait..let me guess....since

Wait..let me guess....since they got rid of Get Out! Magazine...the folks who did ran Get Out! will now run Famous? This may be even more scary than I thought!

Famous Guest's picture

I know I'm great but...

Come on now. I understand everyone's worry that a scary bumble bee will swoop in and make big changes, but I can assure you no one at The Bee wants to turn Famous into The Fresno Bee. As much as I would like to believe I am the only one capable of running an online community, it's simply not true. Famous will be completely separate from the news room, operating out of a different building even. Remember the people who will now be in charge of the site are people. There are a lot of talented young voices working for McClatchy in Fresno, who have watched Famous grow and are fans of the site. I think you can expect more content, more features, more Famous. And I think you, and I, will like it.

If there is something you want to see, or don't want to see, just let us know.

"Jarah Euston will continue

"Jarah Euston will continue to blog for FresnoFamous.com for the next six months until a COMPLETE TRANSITION takes place."

That basically says it all......

It was bound to happen

It was bound to happen folks...the Bee saw how popular Fresno Famous was getting. They saw how FF became the only place where every and anyone could post their opinions and not be as close minded as the Bee's editorial section (and the Bee in general for that fact). So what was expected finally happened. They bought it out. Now what you'll see is a total change although they said they'll keep FF the same. Just like they say the Bee is "open minded". Bottom line, when a big corporation like McClatchy buys a site like FF, the site will definitely turn into another fresnobee.com...slowly but surely. Cheers to Jarah for doing her thing with this site. But now the big corporation has taken over so who knows what will happen now.....

Respect Famous!

Do your thing: make money while you're at it if you can. Phuck all the haters, 'cuz they think in Babylonian terms of their own wants and ideals, not in terms of loving the message and not necessarily the messengers. You have created a hella great forum for people to interact and share ideas, news, and events. MAXIMUM RESPECT TO YOU!

That being said, if the Bee changes this site or shuts it down, well, that would suck!

Congrats

Jarah,
Congratulations for putting together a great website that a major corporation would be interested in purchasing. I hope you got a great deal and I hope that FF continues to be a great resource.

For the Haters,
If you don't like Jarah selling her site then all you have to do is put together your own alternative Fresno site and get thousands of people to participate in it and then just spend your life keeping the website going without regard to personal wants and needs.

On Amos' definition of cool

As someone who has been around, been cool, been hip, and been none of the above in his life so far, I find your definition of "cool" to be funny. In my experience, I find the proverbial "wearing of sunglasses" - aka posturing and reveling in your own pretenses - to be pretty much the opposite of being genuine. In fact, I would argue that "coolness" and striving to be cool (in a fashion-intellectual-meets-kitschy hipster sort of way) often means trying hard to be anything but genuine or sincere.

That has nothing to do with the site, other than the fact that it's also funny to see all these remarks about the news industry by a bunch of people who obviously don't know anything about it, and probably don't even actually read the Bee on a regular basis.

Steph, Steph, Steph

Steph-
Let me start by saying that I THINK I understand the essence of your post and can get past the hyperbole and what not. I just want the record to reflect that Childers has NEVER claimed to be hip. Childers doesn't even actively use the word hip in his vocabulary. In fact, outside of speaking about himself in the third-person right now, Childers has probably done very few hip things in his entire life.
However...I must defend the honor of my home town of Madera. I would refer to it as "Madtown," but I would do so at the risk of being called hip again. Madera is at least twice as hip as, say, Selma. Three times as hip as Fowler. Definitely four times hipper than Shafter and Wasco put together. So...if I am indeed as "hip as Madera can muster," well, I'll be proudly trumpeting that distinction to all of my close buddies down at the Elks Lodge during tonight's Happy Hour, right before I head out to cruise Yosemite Avenue.
In conclusion, thanks to all who have supported Get Out and, especially, those who have helped to further my quest to use my hipness to put myself and Madera on the cutting edge of the new world order. And - remember - we have a motto in Madera:
"At least we aren't the Ranchos."

Famous Posters' Definition of Coolness

Let me get this straight: So Fresno ain't cool and all the people who came from the big city and heard the big talk were cool when they were in the big city. But now that they are in Fresno they aren't cool anymore. So all the people in L.A. are cooler than all the people in Fresno, unless all the people in L.A. move to Fresno, instantly becoming uncool. But there is an exclusive band of Fresno people who remain cool because they know more than anybody else in Fresno and that's why they are cool and everyone else is not. But if the uncool Fresno people move to L.A. they are instantly cool -- unless they move back. . . Glad I tuned into Famous to get this lesson at the knee of Sir Coolness.

Just trying to be cool's picture

For FAMOUS ANUS- uh AMOS

You gotta be kidding me FAMOUS AMOS. You state you've been setting the trend for the last five years now, but ,I ain't neva heard of you. And besides, what are you so proud of. Being a trend setter in a city that's 7 yrs. behind southern california. I used to laugh my ass off when I lived down there and came up here. Everyone had a comment (a bad one) about what I wore, and two years later they were wearing the same thing while I was once again being teased about wearing things that wouldn't even be scene in this city for 2-3yrs. And I'm not saying I'm any trend setter. Get over yourself. Youz a child in my world.

To Steven Japlur ... what's that smell? Oh yea, you must be talking out of your ass because you don't know what the FUCK you are talking about when it comes to the workings of McClatchy, editorial & advertising.

I hope the stock holders of McClatchy didn't pay much for this website, that few people (in the big picture) may visit.

Good as it is, and it is, it's also just another place on the web. And if people like Steven and Steph, and their piss ant attitudes are the only ass bites to have anything to say, then I say move along. The site will only get better without your petty attitude.

I'll stand by and wait to see what's next.

cool like kids in summer school

I've been setting the trend for all that is cool for the past 5 1/2 years now so take what I say as you would the words of any reputable expert: "Coolness" is a reflection of unabashed genuineness with sunglasses on. We have the genuineness so long as we aren't censored; what concerns me more is whether the Bumbling Bee will try to take away our shades.

Famous Amos's picture

More cooler than the coolest of the cool

Fresno Famous is too cool for Fresno, which is too cool for the Bee, which is too cool for you. So, basically, no one is cool enough for anything, which means that FresnoFamous will no longer be cool. Or maybe we'll be too cool for the new Famous. Or, we might also possibly not be cool enough for the coolness that comes with the new Famous. Either way, Fresno and everyone who live there are either too cool or not cool enough for this site. Maybe none of us should ever come back then. At least util we're actually cool, or Famous is cool enough for us. Wait -- why are we so cool again, I foget.

Making sense of the hybrid

I love Fresno Famous. I love the Fresno Bee. FF people are cool. Everyone I know from the Bee is cool. Does that mean Fresno Bee Famous will be cool? I just…just don't know.

I'll put it this way: I loved the band Rage Against The Machine. I also loved the band Soundgarden. I LIKE the band Audioslave.

Steph is cooler than all you

Steph, you're the kind of person that keeps Fresno thinking negative - those left that think negative anyway.

"Famous is/was a direct reflection of Jarah."

Sorry but Jarah is a reflection of Fresno.

"But in the world-view, in a national 'hipster' view, Jarah was/is too GOOD for Fresno. Famous is too good for Fresno. It's what Portland/Seattle/NYC/Austin etc would put together, with some Haight/Ashbury anarchy and yet Silicon Valley flair."

Nobody's too GOOD for Fresno. FF was put together in Fresno, deal with it.

Go live in whatever your perception of cool is and leave the 'No alone.

Hey Bee

Can you just go ahead and shut Famous down now so we don't have to listen to all the trendy too-good for Fresno and the Bee hipsters proclaim how everything sucks.
Serriously folks, get a damn life.
Feel free to hate on the Bee all you want but word is they didn't go looking to buy Famous. It was shopped to them.

Famous Guest's picture

Here's the deal, Josh and BeenBender

Josh, you do a good enough job with Childers et al on Get Out. It's cute. It's also VERY Fresno.

VERY Fresno Bee.

You say there are young intelligent progressive go-getters already at the Bee.

I say, sure..."FOR FRESNO."

Childers is about as hip as Madera can muster. hIS Magazine is about as progressive as our dinky-doo town can produce.

But in the world-view, in a national 'hipster' view, Jarah was/is too GOOD for Fresno. Famous is too good for Fresno. It's what Portland/Seattle/NYC/Austin etc would put together, with some Haight/Ashbury anarchy and yet Silicon Valley flair.

Famous is/was a direct reflection of Jarah.

My worry is the mirror-view has changed.

Valerie, you and Josh and Steve and Will and Childers can claim hip status all you want, but at best, you're no more hip than anything the Bee can or already has mustered.

I see Jarah remains as consultant, but I have a distinct feeling we spoiled Famous fans won't be happy unless she can spill her own blood into the chip circuitry.

Try all you want, Bee folks, but the best you can do? Just ain't likely gonna reach the Euston skies.

Thanks again Jarah and Suzi. I can't wait to see what is next for you, and hope Fresno can pay enough to keep you here...

McClatchy Ownership

McClatchy is an organization is accustomed to double-digit profit ratios. Editorial management is accustomed to total oversight of editorial content. Advertising is accustomed to Gottschalks floating 30 percent of the ad revenue.

What will happen when controversy emerges that inflames their top advertisers? What will happen when Gottschalks is swallowed by a larger fish in the vernal pool of department stores?

yes, pudding crew for me

I'll join the 'let's wait and taste the pudding when it's done' crew and hope for the very best.
--And yes, I think most of us will thank Jarah for what she's given the community.

---I do think (trying to see both sides here) that it is not surprising to see why some people might feel a little weirded out. Fresno Famous being so *much* about the community of folks who scribble here and those who read it, it feels like FresnoFamous and it's community are the same thing---so how can a community be 'sold'? But it is of course a template made up by the F.F. gang, which we are indebted to them for for it's very existence, and which we hope will continue, and, true enough , if the pudding *does* end up tasting wierd, other sites can start up and be thankful for F.F.'s blazing the way.

The BIG Sale

Re: "The proof is in the pudding."...Let me have a taste of your cake/pudding and I'll tell you how good it REALLY is, BUT, let's have a taste first.
We're being a little quick to judge. Maybe this will prove to be a great move. We don't know yet though. We're all afraid we'll get censored, the format's gonna change, we're gonna get censored, did I say we might get censored? But what if this means bigger and better things for our beloved site? Let's stick around. Let's find out. Let's have a taste. Then, when we do say "That's some good fucken cake!" or "Dude, your cake sucks.", we'll be justified.
Congratulations Jarrah! =)

sell off

With the amount of interest and comments from people that this sell has generated it seems maybe that more things around town should be sold.

Anyone want to talk about transit and downtown?

Since there is an opening for plugging other webblogs the: http://www.fresnolution.com site is open for dialog.

Regarding the other comment that says: proof is in the pudding, can anyone please explain this saying? What proof? 60 proof?

Patience

The proof is in the pudding. Let's see some pudding and then call a spade a spade. Any talk till something changes is just talk and supposition. I feel there is potential for the typical sellout feelings to become real, and as well there is potential for this good thing to become great. Let one or the other happen but be patient till then. Nothing has changed.

Pervious Owners!!

Hahahaha.

Well, in the REAL world (you know the one that extends beyond your computer desk) entrepreneurs will create a product and then sell it to at the right price.

It's necessary to PAY BILLS in the real world, Famous Guest. It's also easy to complain when you're NOT personally financially contributing to Fresno Famous...not that your lack of financial support takes away from how valid your point is --- but Famous has been a FREE service to all of us.

What if the idea had come up of making Famous available to PAYING members? Even at a NOMINAL monthly rate (say, $2 or so) My guess is that people would have been put off.....maybe they would have seen THAT as greed or selling out, but I could be way off base.

J. Teehee also makes a good point.....many of us know staff members of The Bee that are really trying to do something good in this community. These people are our friends, and they support the causes of the "creatives" in the community. It's a slap in the face of these friends for us to come on here and automatically assume Famous is going to hell.

EVERYONE knows the stakes are high and that there is a LOT to live up to in this sale/merger. Let's show some class here, folks, lest we give the impression to any new readership that Famous is about quabbling over the things we can not change.

Plus....if it really DOESN'T work out, i'm totally gonna be DOWN for Famous Amos' *FAMOUS FRESNO* blogsite!!

Selling Out to the Mainstream

Fresno Famous has sold it's soul to the Devil.

The pervious owners of Fresno Famous have compromised their integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money.

Fresno Famous credibility has now droped, your ideals have been compromised.

Comming soon to Fresno Famous more Commercialism and next Jummping the Shark, and Famous will have passed its peak.

Famous Guest's picture

Believe it or not...

The Fresno Bee does have young, intelligent, pro-active people on staff, people who care about Fresno (and this site) as much as you do and don't want to see Fresno Famous fall the wayside. Those resources (you may even know some of them) will be used.

Don't shut the door....yet

I recognize that the news of the purchase probably came as a shock to many of you. But I ask that you give the site a chance. We have complete respect for what Jarah has created and we have no intention of altering what is a very valuable link in our community. To answer a few questions that have come up: No, The Bee will not be censoring the site or the blogs. The site is being run independently of The Bee and will retain its current standards as you can tell if you read through the comments since Jarah's announcement. Nor are we going to stop allowing links to other valuable sites such as the FREE www.fresnojobs.org. Why would we? We want Fresno Famous to serve its users and our community with the same original intent and purpose. Ask yourselves this: Why did Jarah choose to sell to The Bee? The answer is simple. She had faith that we would continue to raise Fresno Famous with her vision. Let's put a little trust in her faith and give her decision, her choice, a chance.

correction frankd

we hate it when our friends become more successful than ourselves. i don't mind my friends being on a rung just under me, right where i can rest my hand on top of their heads and pat them condescendingly. in fact, i prefer it that way.

Famous Amos's picture

We Hate When Our Friends Become Successful

I agree with the comment posted earlier that as long as people continue to make Famous what it is.....well, then Famous can continue being what it is.

If, in fact, it DOES transform into something that falls away from what the Famousheads have come to love and respect.....wHaT then, prevents ANYONE else from creating ANOTHER indie blogsite reminescent of Famous?!

It's a little premature and/or melodramatic to give up on Famous simply because Jarah was able to close this deal.....I'm sure there is a LOT more involved in making Famous "happen" than people may realize. A LOT more than the comfort we all have in simply needing to log-on and catch up on some snark.

This was a great business deal, and I'm sure there are a FEW Famous-heads wishing it was THEM selling their site to the Bee. I'm gonna wait and see what happens.....why let THIS raise your blood pressure?!

I'm besieged by envy such that the best I can do is pretend to be happy for you so that I look good to other people. On the inside, i'm torn with the question of "Why not me?"

I just might be serious about that if you weren't so deserving and if I wasn't so evolved. Congrats!

The Bee still sucks, but at least they bought something that doesn't. Whether Ms. Bender (and the rest of the Bumbling Bee) is smart enough to keep her hands off this site will determine whether its success continues. However, it's been my experience that people in her position are usually forced by their inflated egos to try and lend their touch to something they were never able to create in the first place. All I can hope is that this case does not prove to be the exception so that eventually this site is destroyed, and then a year or so later I will start "Famous Fresno" using this site as my model, and I'll tell people that I'll never sell the site, but of course I will, and then I'll have the last laugh.

Famous Amos's picture

Congrats

Hello...

Congratulations Jarah (and Suzi)... at least your personal efforts were compensated. I know it is hard to monetize a project such as FresnoFamous that you ladies had to get FT gigs... Unfortunately, there are not enough businesses in Fresno that are comfortable with online advertising so you could have at least kept the site running independent of "Big Media" (which obviously was one of the reason why FF was a success). (sigh) If we just did not have bills to pay...

Questions:

1. Are there going to be censorship on blogs now? I also presume that because of liability issues, McClatchy would want to moderate content.

2. Will the links be moderated too? I operate http://www.fresnojobs.org (a FREE job site for Fresno community) and it directly competes with McClatchy's online properties. I would assume that they would take that out (or maybe out of goodwill they won't).

3. Do you have a non-compete agreement clause? Maybe you could create another after your "agreement" expires. Because frankly, I do not see FF thriving without you. And we need a web site that is "independent" from control. I see a FresnoFamous2.0 coming...

4. Would your blog title now be changed to "Tasty Grapes"? j/k

Well... I bid you success with your gig at CVBI. About that... I hope that CVBI could duplicate Cargo Bay of Clovis in downtown Fresno. I'll be the first in line when you do.

Bye Famous. I am signing out.

-v

PS. No... you didn't sell out (although at first it kinda sound like it). You did what you had to do... Most entrepreneurs would have done what you just did (actually you probably inspired some) given your personal and professional circumstances.
