Sad news for Fresno cyclists, Re-Cycle is closing its doors.
The store, in the Van Ness Village couryard, has been a hangout for DIY bike enthusiasts since it opened three years ago and has served as the kick-off point for monthly Bike-Hop events. Owner Ben Kloos is hitting the road for a few months and can't keep the shop open, but says he would love to see a similar venue for cyclists, continue in the Tower District/downtown area.
Da new Name...
New name is (I think,) 'Tower Velo' (or 'Vello,' not sure of the spelling, but I better find out,,, I'm probably painting up the sign...)
Chris, Deborah, and some of the guys are down there most evenings past 5, we're still sorting out stuff, soon to be putting up shelves and assorted things,
----and getting ready for a grande-openning in early Feb..
(He was saying something I think about the 10th.)
--Feel free to come by and say hello, if you see the gate open somebody is probably back there, (as usual.)
BIKE-HOP is still slated to start up there, (for ever and ever, amen,)
and this Thursday's run will be leaving the courtyard by (or around,) I think 6p, (as usual.)
(Chris has been talking of running a tighter 'leave-time,'(due to darkness, and folks having more places to visit, yadda yadda.)
-And I know that they have some excellent plans, not just for the shop, and the hop, ---but things that are going to have a good impact on the bi-pedalling community in the Tower and beyond, as well... (Chris is way into folks being able to commute on bikes and make the most use of them...)
-This is going to be very cool..
-This is the CONTINUANCE of something that has been very cool.
(Ben, looking forward to riding with you on Thursday...)
PS:
Folks, I know he has light kits there for sale, (some,) (though call first to see if he's 'selling yet.'
(the phone number is the same as ReCycle's)
--Either way, be sure to make sure you ride is well lit with front (white) and rear (red blinkies,) --I think the going ticket for a 'non-lit,' bike at night was still holding at 150.00 (ouch.)
new stuff
It will reopen under new name same heart,I can't remember new name, don't fret new owners cool.
he lives!
pilgrimage to Luke's driveway!
all praises and fair winds 2yer back
smokesignals
Actually, he currently lives in my driveway. That sounds like a joke, but it's the truth.
(to all ben fans)
he's not at the shop a whole lot... (I don't think,)
I know he'll be there tomorrow evening (the old Evening hours,)
but I'm not sure.
You'll probably have to want and hide out near his usual haunts and just tackle him, then tell him all the nice things you might want him to hear,
---because the buggar doesn't get near computers much either...
(not to stop nice things from being said about the man, He's just gone waaaaaaaaaay low-fi.)
he's become sort of elusive... legendary, HowardHughes-ish even, (you know without the long fingernails and really bad bodyfunk...)
-be on the look out for a tall skinny guy on a bike, wearing a helmet, just standing there at the light, smiling, without even putting his foot down, (he runs a fixie, and loves to do track stands, it's like he's glued himself to the air... kind of creepy in fact, -that and the gills...)
Well on his way to becoming an urban legend.
-perhaps smokesignals???
Whatever is written about him, it needs to be nailed to the door of Re-Cycle, or gotten to him in hard copy...
(just a suggestion.)
ben
not sure where to begin here, since this is a bolt from the blue. Ben's been my model for business with conscience and heart. i tried the high-end when we first met and was delightfully surprised to find he could deliver the goods from such a small shop. He helped me set up and equip a number of bikes for all purposes, with expert knowledge and application. i am considering a world tour because of his patient helpfulness with all considerations. That particular bike is built and ready for expedition, otherwise unimagined had i not met Ben, a man half my age. His shop has been the best hang in this town for all types of rollers, richest to poorest financially, but all the better for his getting them back on two wheels. Everyone i know has heard of Ben and his good nature and now the shop's on pause. i don't know what to think but to find ways to carry on any way possible what he's given to the bike community.
