Identity Theft in Fresno

Fresno Area Rated Among the Top High Risk Areas for Identity Theft

In a Fresno Bee article, March 2, it was reported,

"Heat and smog aren't the only hazards of the central San Joaquin Valley.

"Valley cities had some of the nation's highest rates of identity theft in a recent Federal Trade Commission report."

"The Madera area ranked No. 2 for the number of complaints per capita, behind No. 1 Napa. Fresno, the Hanford-Corcoran area and the area including Visalia and Porterville all ranked in the top 50 of about 400 metropolitan areas with more than 100,000 population nationwide in 2006."

We can either get burned up about this, get discouraged, resign ourself to the reality, or do something to protect ourselves. I have determined to take action and that includes:

1) Being informed. I have gathered government sponsored, non-profit, and commercially produced information and have become a student of the issue. I have posted some gleanings on one of my blogs: http://indentityprotection.blogspot.com

2) Being Prepared - I have taken some steps to prepare myself in the event that I become a victim.

3) Being cautious. I am watching my most personal information while not going into hiding.

4) Being involved. I have decided to speak out espcially in my sphere of influence to help prepare people to inform and protect themselves.

Why Fresno?

To Commoner, Re: Mail

That was an eye opener for us. We live in a rural subdivision and someone hit every mailbox. A family member cancelled all of her cards and changed checking information because of outgoing bills that had been stolen. We now mail everything important inside the post office. I have information that mail has actually been stolen from mail boxes outside post offices with some clever home made devices.

To Andy - Re: Napa

Ineresting observation and question. I would be interested in some expert analysis.

mail is easy enough to steal anywhere

i live on a fairly busy street and have had my mail stolen for sure at least once. probably 4 times. and just a few days ago, my dear mother gave out my unlisted phone number to someone "trying to get a hold of me to talk to me about [name she couldn't remember] who receives their tax information at my address." mmm, hmm.

i am now keeping a very close watch on everything, trying to be there when this person starts using my identity so the damage is kept to a minimum.

thanks for the link and information!!

Why Napa?

I was curious to why Napa was the the number one with ID theft complaints. Is it the rural towns most effected as mail boxes are easier to steal from?
