Wednesday I had the pleasure of visiting The Fresno Bee to sit on a Diversity Committee panel on blogging.
The Fresno Bee Diversity Committee Presents
Blogging
Fad? Long-term trend? What does it mean for us?
A panel discussion involving local bloggers and national experts about how the Internet is diversifying the way people are getting their information.
On the panel was Frank D of
Urban Tribe 6 and
AudioHarvest, Bria, moderator for the
Downtown Fresno MySpace
group and author of the newly minted
bellyacher, Rick from
Unspun, Matt from
The Beehive, national expert
Chris Pirillo via seven-second delayed video conference, and myself.
Blogging is a scary thing for some news organizations. Will bloggers steal our readers? Our jobs? Will our democracy crumble if people turn to blogs for news?
What does it mean for us? There are
lots of
blogs devoted to
these concerns.
Some audience members seemed genuinely interested in what this whole blogging thing was all about. Some, it seemed, just wanted us to admit most blogs are crap. Managing Editor Betsy Lumbye asked, How do you separate the wheat from the chaff? It's a fair question, and I would open it up to Famous readers. Do you have a hard time finding blogs that interest, entertain, or educate you?
The most powerful thing about blogging is not the blog. Any one blog could disappear and no one would bat an eyelash. But the ability for anyone, anywhere to publish content and links for virtually no cost is what is transforming the way we receive our information. And the information we receive is becoming richer and more nuanced, thanks to the power of links, tags, and feeds.
It seems like news organizations would be excited, not frightened, by that. I'm glad the Bee is thinking about these issues and it was fun discussing them.
