Wired points to quite possibly the best headline ever from 1934's Fresno Bee.

...I'm just freakin' loving the illustration

-you got yer spaceships, yer aeroplanes, yer city burning in ruins..

but wait, there's more...

-the Rock'm Sock'ms going at it in the foreground are both have massive scowling metallic faces,
that have noses made out of steel slabs probably the length of a railroad car...
----but steam is coming out of the back of dude (with the mace)'s head,
--and the one getting bashed like the wreck of the old 97 has a top not unlike 'tin-man' from Wizard of Oz...

(and crooked Lou up in the corner?, (with the cool antenna and fin thingie (ala the streamlined locomotives back east???) --THIS guy has not only 'death-ray,' eyes and stuff coming out of his body, ---but weilds huge 'buzz-saw,' blades for hands...
(apparently meant to go after the sequoias and lumber yards...

(..somebody better warn Lowes and Home Depot...)

...and you thought substance abuse was a 'sixties,' thing in da 'no...

Leon Theremin was in the forefront here

The mad scientist from Russia, while living in America in the 30's was amassing more and more debt. He was losing everything---his money, his companies, his equipment, his patents....and Remote Control was one his things----just like the goofy (woops, I mean "sublime") instrument named after him, it was all about wireless/remotecontrol/automatic-----he invented the whole "magic eye" thing that now opens doors or beeps when you walk in 7-11 etc.
---and remote control fighter boats for the navy were demonstrated (probably something like you'd see at the Disneyland Hotel now...or even a public park), but the Government didn't bite.
That's ok, Theremin didn't need any money anyway---he was off to one of Stalin's prisons in arctic Europe--and back here in the U.S. we got all those groovy 50's Sci-Fi soundtracks.
----wait a sec here, I think I've gone off topic a bit.
