Do you really like sports, even if they aren't the "big" ones that get all the tv and press coverage?
Are you tired of athletes with a "me first" attitude?
or
Do you remember Fresno Pacific receiving attention lately for guests of the university?
If any of those answers were yes, then you should check out what is going on this weekend at Fresno Pacific. FPU is hosting, for the second year in a row, the NAIA National Championships in Track and Field. The meet will begin on Thursday, May 24 @ 10 am and run through Saturday, May 26 @ 6:30. There will be a lot of exciting action on and around the track.
The meet will begin with the bang, as it gets underway with the women's hammer throw. FPU senior Karley Kalinich currently leads the nation and hopes to figure heavily in not only the hammer competition but also the shot put and discus. In fact, FPU has 3 senior female throwers that will be participating at the National Track meet. Molly McAmis will also be in hammer, discus, and shot put, while Dia Matthews will be in the shot put and discus. All three ladies are ranked in the top ten in the shot put, and top fifteen in the discus. McAmis enters the hammer competition ranked fourth. Overall, FPU has seventeen athletes competing at Nationals, the most in school history.
Thursday's events run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday goes from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday goes from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. that's a lot of track & field. If you can only make it out one day of the three day event, make it Saturday. Saturday will be the finals for most events. For you early birds, the marathon starts at 6 a.m. The rest of the day gets under way at 1 p.m. Tickets are reasonably priced with a 3-Day Pass $15.00, Adults $6.00, Students with ID $4.00, 7 and under FREE. Not bad, eh?
Head on over to the Fresno Pacific Track. FPU is located @ Chestnut & Butler, although the track is on Willow, just south of Butler. Off-street parking is available on campus in designated parking lots. Parking is also available at the Steinert Parking Lot immediately adjacent to the Steinert Athletic Complex and at the Willow Avenue Parking Lot, located off Williow Avenue at the north end of the track. Considerable on-street parking is available in the area, particularly along Willow Avenue. Emergency fire lanes, handicapped stalls and restricted parking zones will be enforced.

so, it started very well today. fresno pacific women placed first and fourth in the hammer competition. they both performed very well, and as a coach, dang it i'm proud.
and, if you check on the abc30 link in the above comment they've got the video on their site.
more track to come...
get hammered @ 10 am, then again @ 1 pm
yeah, see what i consider the best event in track and field, the hammer throw @ those times tomorrow. 10 is women, 1 is men. the women throw a 4k (8.8 lbs) and the men throw 7.26 (16lbs). crazy to watch, super cool to see them fly.
