I just found the comment really ironic, what with all of the 'we're tired of the rest of california picking on us,' mindset that Fresnans are so much 'the victim of,' -when the comment was basically about keeping another town, (that also gets trashed alot,) down...

I think the laddie protesteth too much...

I personally liked how the Smog City Girls spoke of their match (even with Bakersfield?)
-in how they were 'outskated and went up a tough team' but had a great time...

-so here you have the 'classy,' sport (soccer,) being buzzed up using rather unclassy methods..
-and rollerderby (not viewed as 'classy like soccer,' ---being really classy and 'sportsman (sportswomen,) like'
-when they ARE in fact whompin the snot out of each other, but have a great perspective on their town, their sport, and the comeraderie of their fellow players...
(perhaps we should follow this example???)

I just thought the remark was an intersting display of how Fresnans say that they 'don't want to be berated by other cities in the state,'
--yet dis towns like Bakersfield (etc. etc.)

really? you're taking offense that i'm trying to stir up some interest in this match through good natured, inter-city rivalry on behalf of our soccer team?

it would be one thing if i was really slandering or defaming bakos. or, if i was giving a point by point exposition on why bakos sucked. or if i was pumping out hate speech. or doing something other than making a joke.

it should be noted that bakersfield is a)numerically smaller ( hence little); and b)south of fresno. now, we can quibble over whether they are a brother/sister/distant cousin of fresno, but if we do beat them, we will keep them down in the standings. which is something that i am sure every member of the team would like to do.

it should also be noted that i, in fact, with have little or nothing to do with this, as i will only be a spectator of the game. i will cheer, and, if my friends make the journey up for the game, i will engage in good natured ribbing, even though they're not big fans of bakersfield's team.

Oregon vs California

It reminds me of when I lived in Oregon and Oregon State or The University of Oregon was playing a California team and fans of the Ducks and Beavers were bad-mouthing California when in reality 90% of their football players were from California. Made me laugh.
When it comes to sports, it is more fun to bad mouth the other team as long as people kept it in perspective which most could ( but not all).

...okay, former soccer fullback here, (my position has been blended into something else these days, I have no idea what we're called, I was the big guy who got to play human wall againts halfbacks and wings and enjoyed it waaaay too much just for the locomotive properties, and the fact that I got to protect my goalie...)

-feed them ground up soccer trophies in their burritos because of their pride???

we tell them that they all have to be ritually circumscised before playing here, then attack them while they're at home with coldpacks, watching FIFA reruns...
