Swing the wiffle bat
July 18, 2007
You all know Fresno Famous is all about podcasts, local wiffle ball leagues and nerd rights.
So is Famous user Wiffle. We catch up with one of our best bloggers, biggest supporters and good friend.
Name/age/location/occupation?
Mike Seay. Thirty six. Fresno. I've cheated on Fresno with several other towns, but I convinced Fresno the other towns meant nothing to me and she took me back. I have a day job that involves using a phone at some point during the shift. The other things I do — that pay nothing by the way: I cohost a local podcast called "Dorktown" with my good friend Zohrab and I commish' the Fresno Wiffleball League — very important stuff dude. Also I go around promoting local nerd-rights issues, like having public WiFi access at Heroes Comics; and getting theaters to provide privileged "nerd-seating" for movies that have Wookiees or characters wearing a codpiece.
Do you remember your first Famous post?
It may have been the one about the different reoccurring characters that you see at local music shows: the jealous girlfriend of the singer that can't stand seeing girl groopies all over their man, the drunk guy that tries to get up onstage and keeps yelling at the band to play something he knows ... etc. The post was early on, when Jarah still had to approve it before it got posted. It was cool because it felt like you were being published — even though, I doubt she rejected anything that was sent to her. But it still felt nice. That's unlike now. You can post the grocery list from your latest trip to Vons and it still gets on there (and would probably get a ton of comments).
As one of the top blogs on Famous, do you have any advice for other posters?
Always keep your mind open to an idea for a blog, especially when you're out, around town. And when you have an idea, write it out quickly while it's still fresh. Keep it Fresno related. If somebody tells you your post sucked, they're probably right, but leave it up there anyway and learn from it. Ruthlessly edit yourself; make your point and get out.
You're into music/sports, yes? Where's your favorite venue to see live music? Favorite sports bar?
That's one of the many reasons why I love Fresno. It's a great town for music and sports. The best venue for live music is Starline. Good vibe and overall ambiance. Also though, I've never had a bad time at Club Fred (Editor's note: Check the site. There's a cool show there Friday night). As a side note, Selland is way better than Save Mart. Sports bar, my heart says Silver Dollar, but right now it's Bulldog Grill. Best televisions and they keep the full mix of games on. They don't just turn on ESPN's networks and then forget about it the rest of the day. The food and atmosphere is pretty good too.
You'll be good at this. Give us your best piece of Fresno trivia.
Fresno ranks highest in California for facial hair per-capita; and yes, my study included Bakersfield. In a related fact, Pat Hill's FuManchu is a five time National Facial Hair Champion, beating the Fresnan record of three, set by Ray Appleton's Goatee.
Parting shots...I mean thoughts.
Fresno Famous is as important to Fresno as things like the Downtown Sadium, Tri-Tip, Tower Theatre or Roeding Park. I truly mean that. But not as important as that electronic billboard at Blackstone and Shaw, I get all my local casino news from that thing.

wow.. you might want to consider getting out more.

I know I'm gonna bust out my Batman Cod-piece next time I see these ladies in action.
And if I drank coffe, I know I would get it from Cafe Corazon.

I enjoy the drunken, yet lucid, discussions between Mr. "C" and his copodcaster Bells.(dang, did I just invent a word) Kudos to the Wiffinator.
