A proud Harry Potter nerd
I finished the seventh book in the Harry Potter series Monday night. What a fun story, with mythological proportions. I like to read and try to balance fiction and nonfiction.
It wasn't until the seventh book that I realized why I enjoyed these books so much. This book made my transformation so clear, that it finally sunk in.
I was transported back to a time when reading was fun...I mean really fun. The time in my life when I would sneak a flashlight into bed after my parents had told me to go to sleep and had turned out my room light a few times. Back to a time when I would sneak out to a hammock that I'd tied between two elm trees and read, while I could hear family members yelling for me. Back to a time when my friends and I all read books, like the Tolkien books, Watership Down, Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe, Alive, Catcher int eh Rye, Flowers for Algernon, the Three Musketeers.
The time between fourth and eighth grade was a magical time for reading. We strayed between classics, young adult and adult fiction.
This is where the Harry Potter books have taken me...back to a magical time and a magical feeling. This is the beauty of Ms. Rowling's books. Forget about our obsession over the money or the record book sales. The art and the story are more valuable than the purchase price.

HI CRAIG! I NEED YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS!
Dear Craig,
I have no idea if you'll find this, but I'm getting tired of reading blah blah blah all over Fresno about you just to get your current email address. I sent a nice letter into cyberspace somewhere--the last email address I had for you. I understand you met my sister-in-law today--she called me tonight. So I wanted to say "hi." Please write me an email if you get this, and I'll send another nice letter your way. I'm really sorry about the thyroid cancer...that must be really hard. For a small gland, it can sure mess things up! I too love Harry Potter. And, may I just say, the tattoo explains a LOT to me! ;-) Love, Becky

Fan of Rowling's Potter
Bought the book Saturday afternoon. Spent Sunday reading the book cover to cover. I've started reading it for the second time.
With Rowling reading is fundamental!
kind of reminds me of:
a book that came out something like twenty years ago called 'This Present Darkness,' (Peretti,) -who followed up with 'Piercing the Darkness,'
Big fictional work about angels and devils duking it out...
It wound up spawning this massive era of reeeeally bad theology (internationally,) in tons of churches, and was considered to be one of the top selling 'church,' focused books of all time...
And after the huge impact on the churches happened and all sorts of very strange behaviors were going on (that took years to settle down,) the author was like:
'...Um, I wrote it as a work of fiction, it was never meant to be a textbook or guide or anything.' (The guy accidently kicked off a whole church movement simply trying to write a spiritual-fiction book (not nearly as good as C.S. Lewis or Tolkiens stuff.)
Also?
What does blow my mind was how many publishers JK Rowling had to go to (It was something like over a dozen, maybe two dozen?)
who wouldn't accept it, and then finally one did,
(all saying that the story wouldn't sell, the last one thinking it was a bit of a risk...)
come by tomorrow and borrow mine

What a cultural phenomenon.
Barnes and Nobles sold what...1.8 million books in the first two days. Add too that all the other booksellers (hell, I just saw the book for sale at Rite Aid) and tack on a few more days and you're got a whole lot of people having a very similar book-reading experience. That's maybe 10s of millions of people taking in the same information. That's water cooler fodder for sure.
Is that kind of mind blowing, or is it just me?

I am on the 200th page so far of the new book. The wife and I are battling over who gets custody of the book for that day. She reads appreciatively faster then I do, so it will be all mine in a few days but for now it is a tussle for the book.
My oldest daughter did the whole book release party at Barnes and Noble and had a great time staying up for it. She will get a hold of the book once I am done with it. She is up at camp this week so I should hopefully finish it before she gets back.
