Few people in Fresno have an accurate account of what it means to live downtown. The early-adopters at Vagabond Lofts, the ultra-early-adopters at the Pearl Building and those lining up for H Street know what day-to-day challenges face those living in a struggling downtown.
What if Mayor Autry and the city council members lived downtown for one month? We'll put them up at the new security bank lofts, but they get no car. They have to walk or take the bus to work, but can use city vehicles to conduct official business. At 5 p.m., they have to hoof it from the Justice League to their temporary homes.
Once our elected officials experience what it is like to be a downtown resident, they can more honestly discuss what would be best for downtown. Think of what might happen: As news of the experiment spreads, Mayor Autry and the council are praised nationwide as city officials willing to make significant personal strides to benefit their community. Fresno will be viewed as a forward-thinking community and not just a quick punchline to a TV writer's joke.
What a novel idea!
One i'm sure they would never go for.
Prove us wrong, gentlemen!
gotta live it to know what to fix
Stellar idea!

yes these elected officials should really live in their districts, and the other districts they have control over.
