The 30th Annual Big Muddy Film Festival
February 22 – March 2, 2008

In its 30th year edition, the Big Muddy Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals run by film and art students in the US. Dedicated to supporting works both emerging and accomplished independent filmmakers. The Festival showcases experimental, documentary, narrative, and animation of all genres and themes. We hope that the following information will help you with preparing your films for submission.

Awards

The Big Muddy Film Festival provides $4000 cash awards to the best works in competition in each category. It also selects two films for John Michaels Award and Audience Choice Award.

Accepted Formats

For Preview: DVD, Mini DV tape, DV Cam, and VHS.
For Festival screening: DVD, Mini DV, DV Cam, VHS, 16mm or 35 mm print (all videos must be NTSC).

Submissions

Each work submitted should be accompanied by an entry form and fee.
Only one film for each entry form, one film for on each DVD, MiniDV, and VHS tape. If your wish to submit two or more films, please use separate entry forms and DVDs or tapes. Entries must be in English or with English subtitles. All works must be completed after January, 2006. Films that had been previously submitted to the Big Muddy Film Festival are not eligible. We will email you after receiving your submission.
The festival does not assume any responsibility for any damage or loss. Make checks or money orders payable to: “Southern Illinois University Carbondale.”

The entry fee is waived for past jurors.

Selection and Competition

The pre-screening selection committee selects films to be shown in the competition. A panel of three artists/critics of national and international recognition including an artist from the state of Illinois determines the winners in the competition. Votes from the audience determines the Audience Choice Award. Our recent jurors include: Babette Mangolte, Amy Granat, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Stephanie Black, Joanna Priestly, and Jim Zarmusch.

If your film(s) is(are) selected, you will be notified by January 25, 2008.

Early (by October 31, 2007) $30 (<20min), $35 (<20-50min), $40 (>50min)
Regular (November 30, 2007) $35 (<20min), $40 (<20-50min), $45 (>50min)
Late (by January 4, 2008) $40 (<20min), $45 (<20-50min), $50 (>50min)
